SYBCom - Sem 4 AEC - Self Esteem Skills

   Self Esteem Skills

1. What do you understand by self-esteem?

Self-esteem means how we see and value ourselves. It is about having confidence in our abilities and feeling good about who we are. High self-esteem helps us face challenges, while low self-esteem can make us doubt ourselves. Self-esteem comes from accepting our strengths and weaknesses. A healthy self-esteem allows us to live happily and work towards our goals.

2. Why do you think some people feel superior to others?

Some people feel superior because they compare themselves to others and think they are better. This may happen due to pride, overconfidence, or trying to hide their own insecurities. They may also have been praised too much, leading to a big ego. This attitude can harm their relationships and make them less understanding.

3. Why do you think some people feel inferior to others?

People may feel inferior when they compare themselves to others and feel less capable or successful. It can be due to past failures, criticism, or lack of confidence. They might focus too much on their weaknesses and ignore their strengths. This can stop them from reaching their true potential.

4. What do you consider to be the right approach to understanding the worth of an individual?

The right approach is to focus on a person’s inner qualities like kindness, honesty, and skills rather than judging by appearance or status. Every person has unique strengths and value. Encouraging others and treating everyone equally can help. Understanding that worth is not measured by success alone is important.

5. Why is good self-esteem important for personal growth and finding employment?

Good self-esteem helps us believe in ourselves and try new things. It makes us confident in interviews and handling work challenges, which improves our chances of success in life and career. It helps us stay positive and motivated even in tough times. Employers also look for people who are self-assured and reliable.

Proverbs on Language and self Esteem:

1.     My language is my country. (Breton)

Language is an important part of a person's identity. It connects people to their culture and history. When people speak their language, they feel proud and united. Losing a language can mean losing a part of one's heritage and losing his country. Language decides my country and culture.

2.     The strength of a person is in his intelligence and tongue. (Arabic)

A person’s true power comes from knowledge and how they speak. Intelligence helps in making wise decisions. Speaking well can influence others. Both are important for success in life. Your language (communication skill) and your intellect are your power.

3.     The more languages you know, the more you are human. (Czech)

Knowing many languages helps a person understand different cultures. It makes communication easy and builds friendships. It creates connection with others. It also improves thinking and learning. Learning languages makes life richer.

4.     As long as a language lives, the people will not perish. (Czech)

A language keeps the culture and traditions of a people alive. If a language disappears, the connection to history is lost. Speaking a language helps people stay united. It keeps their identity strong. So it is rightly said that, if your language lives; your culture lives. If your language dies, your culture also dies.

5.     As the man is, so is his language. (Danish)

A person’s way of speaking shows their character. Kind people speak kindly, and rude people speak harshly. How someone speaks tells a lot about them. Good language brings respect. Education, politeness and kindness reflects in your language.

6.     You must answer the devil in his own language. (Indian)

Sometimes, to deal with a bad person, you must use their way of speaking. This means being smart and handling situations wisely. It teaches that one must adapt to circumstances. Speak kindly with kind people, but react and speak with aggression towards wrong people, because bad people don’t understand kind language. If you speak kindly to the devil, he will underestimate your strength and harm you.

7.     Love understands all languages. (Romanian)

Love is a universal feeling. People can express love through actions, not just words. No matter which language someone speaks, love can be felt and understood. When there is love, there is no barrier of language.

11. A (foreign) language is more easily learnt in the kitchen than at school. (German)

Learning a language through real-life use is easier than from books. Talking to people daily helps in learning quickly. Practical use makes learning natural and fun.

v Real-Life Experience: In a paragraph of 150 words, write about a person who has either a superiority complex or inferiority complex and explain how this false understanding of one's worth is unhealthy for the individual and the organisation.

Ravi worked in a big company. He always thought he was better than others because he had studied in a top college. He looked down on his co-workers and never listened to their ideas. His pride made others dislike him. As a result, his team did not support him, and he failed to complete his projects. This is an example of a superiority complex, where a person believes they are better than others.

On the other hand, Meera was very smart, but she lacked confidence. She always thought others were better than her. She never shared her ideas in meetings because she felt they were not good enough. This is called an inferiority complex.

Both attitudes are harmful. A superiority complex makes a person arrogant, while an inferiority complex stops a person from growing. A balanced attitude is important for personal and professional success.
