Vocabulary Development: Meaning in Context:

Look up a dictionary and find the meaning of the words and phrases below, as they are used in the context of the story.

1.           Hold up – a delay, support someone

2.           Plod – to walk slowly and in a heavy or tired way

3.           Bankrupt – not having enough money to pay your debts

4.           Dash out – To leave quickly with force

5.           Rapidity – fast, Quick

6.           Barrow – a hand cart

7.           Imminent – likely   to  happen  very  soon,

8.           Farsighted – visionary, foresee

9.           Aggravated – intensify something, to make more aggressive, someone angry

10.        Refuse – Trace, garbage, rubbish

11.        Clutter – scattered objects in an untidy way

12.        Smote – hit or strike with a blow. (Past of Smite)

Using Words Accurately:

1.           Joy  and  Happiness:

Positivity ultimately brings happiness to life.

He found happiness in the simple things, like a morning walk or reading a good book.

2.           Sad and gloomy:

Mayank was sad because of his father’s death that has made the atmosphere of his family gloomy.

She felt sad when she heard the news of her friend's illness and the atmosphere was gloomy, just as her heart.

3.           Listen and hear:

Even though she could hear the noise of the crowd, she tried to listen attentively to her teacher.

She asked her students to listen carefully to the instructions before they start writing the answers.

He didn't hear the doorbell because he was deeply engaged in his book.

4.           Speak and talk:

She was shy to speak in public, but while with her friends she talks too much.

She was invited to speak at the conference about her research.

Whenever they get together, they talk for hours about their favorite books and movies.

5.           Communicate and converse:

 They communicate via sign language, but converse in whispers when alone.

 The manager used emails to communicate the new company policies to all employees.

 They love to converse about philosophy and literature over a cup of coffee.

6.           Intelligent and clever:

The software is intelligent, but its clever design makes it user-friendly.

She was an intelligent student; she could answer all the questions easily.

The clever fox could save its life.
