ADAPTABILITY SKILLS

     Vocabulary Development:

1.     Downtown: The central business district of a city, typically the area with shops, offices, and entertainment.
2.     Bewildered: Confused or puzzled; uncertain about what to do or think.
3.     Stokers: People who tend or feed fuel into a fire, especially in a steam engine or furnace.
4.     Retorts: Quick, sharp, or witty replies, often in response to an argument or criticism.
5.     Scooped: To take up or remove (something) with a scoop; also, to be the first to publish or report on a story.
6.     Uncanny: Strange or mysterious, especially in a way that causes unease or fear.
7.     Nozzle: A spout or opening, often of a hose or pipe, through which a liquid or gas is directed.
8.     Absurd: Ridiculously unreasonable or nonsensical; contrary to logic or common sense.
9.     Elasticity: The ability of an object or material to return to its normal shape after being stretched or compressed.
10.  Veritable: True or real; used to emphasize a metaphor or to indicate authenticity.
11.  Curt: Rudely brief or abrupt in speech or manner.
12.  Transient: Lasting for a short time; temporary or passing in nature.
13.  Virtuosos: Highly skilled artists, especially in the fields of music or the fine arts.
14.  Stolid: Showing little or no emotion; impassive or not easily excited.
15.  Dissuade: To persuade someone not to take a particular course of action.
16.  Hombres: A Spanish word for "men," often used informally or colloquially.
 

·      Active Voice and Passive Voice:

Change the following sentences from active to passive voice.

1.     We implemented the orders.

Ans: The orders were implemented by us.

2.     They scooped coal with huge shovels and hurled it with uncanny aim at tiny doors.

Ans: Coal was scooped by them with huge shovels and hurled at tiny doors with uncanny aim.

3.     The company paid its men only twice a month.

Ans: The men were paid only twice a month by the company

4.     They called the most prominent stokers into the office.

Ans: The most prominent stokers were called into the office by them.

  •  Change the following sentences from passive to active voice.

1.     The employees were appreciated by the manager for their cooperation.

Ans: The manager appreciated the employees for their cooperation.

2.     The children were given scholarships for higher studies.

Ans: The school gave the children scholarships for higher studies.

3.     A new health insurance scheme has been announced by the government.

Ans: The government has announced a new health insurance scheme.

4.     The unemployed youth is being taken care of by the employment guarantee programme.

Ans: The employment guarantee programme is taking care of the unemployed youth.

5.    The oil companies had been told not to increase the price of oil until further orders.

Ans: The authorities had told the oil companies not to increase the price of oil until further orders.

·      Direct and Indirect Speech:

Punctuate the following sentences which are in direct speech.

1.     I will make sure that your insurance claim is settled in three months he said.

Ans: "I will make sure that your insurance claim is settled in three months," he said.

2.     The accountant said open an account to cash your cheque.

Ans: The accountant said, "Open an account to cash your cheque."

3.     We told them you have to join our team tomorrow.

Ans: We told them, "You have to join our team tomorrow."

4.     The doctor said to not smoke.

Ans: The doctor said, "Do not smoke."

5.     Please take us to visit an industry the students said to their teacher.

Ans: "Please take us to visit an industry," the students said to their teacher.

 

Change these sentences into indirect speech:

1.     The officer said to the new recruit, ‘You have to wear identity card when you enter the office.’

Ans: The officer told the new recruit that he had to wear an identity card when he entered the office.

2.     The new recruit said, ‘yes sir, I will wear it right away.’

Ans: The new recruit replied that he would wear it right away.

3.     The manager said, ‘Please inform me in advance if you are unable to come to work.’ 

Ans: The manager requested to be informed in advance if the person was unable to come to work.

4.     The customer asked, ‘what is the cost of this product?’

Ans: The customer asked what the cost of the product was.

5.     Sriram said to his father, ‘I am fortunate to have a father like you.

Ans: Sriram told his father that he was fortunate to have a father like him.
